Gorgodze, an irreplaceable stalwart for Georgia, captained his team to victories against Tonga and Namibia that ensured the team’s automatic qualification for the 2019 World Cup in Japan.
Affectionately known among supporters as Gorgodzilla, Georgia’s captain was named in the Team of the Week on the opening weekend of the competition and also picked by the prestigious Rugby World magazine for its list of the 15 top players of the World Cup pool stage.

Gorgodze’s important role in the Georgian side was clearly evident in their Pool C loss to Argentina, after he was shown a yellow card and spent 10 minutes in the sin bin. Gorgodze was also named Man of the Match in Georgia’s first ever game against New Zealand on October 3 that drew recognition to the team’s efforts against the back-to-back world champions.
