Georgia is celebrating World Food Day by announcing several new projects that aim to achieve food security, eradicate poverty and achieve social protection of the rural population.

The path towards achieving these goals lies in the development of agriculture. So the Ministry of Agriculture – in line with the priorities of the National Strategy on Agricultural Development – started implemented several projects, including the Farmer Registration System in Georgia.

The pilot version of the project has been put into practice in Georgia’s Racha-Lechkhumi region, where 300 farmers have been registered in the electronic database.

Today Georgia’s Agriculture Minister, the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO), Austrian Development Cooperation and the EU funded European Neighbourhood Programme for Agriculture and Rural Development (ENPARD) came together to celebrate the launch of the new project in Georgia.

The project was presented as part of the World Food Day celebration and 70th anniversary of the establishment of FAO.

Representatives of the Georgian Government, diplomatic corps, international organisations as well as NGO and private sector representatives attended the celebration ceremony at the Radisson Blu Iveria Hotel in capital Tbilisi today.

During the event individuals who had contributed significantly to the work of FAO in Georgia were awarded FAO Memorial Medals.

The event continued with a photo exhibition on the topic of agriculture, where guests saw photos by Georgian artist Goga Chanadiri.
