Today Georgia’s Prime Minister, the Minister of Education and teachers from different schools gathered to celebrate World Teacher’s Day.

Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili congratulated teachers on their special day and said the future of Georgia depended on high quality education, and promised his Government would create better conditions for teachers so they are always motivated and share their knowledge with pupils.

Our Government’s priority is to support the conditions of teachers and increase their salaries,” said Garibashvili.

Since 2013 teachers’ salaries has increased in Georgia. The salary of teachers for the 2015-2016 academic year has increased 65 percent and now equalled the national average salary.

We increased teachers’ salary by 65 percent, built 10 new schools and eight schools are being built now,” Garibashvili said.

"Meanwhile 1,069 schools were rehabilitated. Studying is free for 21 faculty students and as a result 12,000 students get free education. We are providing transportation for 1,150 school pupils and have given school books to 500,000 pupils,” he added.

The Prime Minister conceded more effort can be taken.

"I understand it is not enough but when our Government came into power the budget of the Ministry of Education was 617 million GEL. This year it is 840 million GEL and next year it will be 975 million GEL. I think in very short period of time we did quite well,” said Garibashvili.
