Georgian police detain two locals for racial discrimination

Two Georgian citizens have been arrested for verbally and physically assaulting two Nigerian citizens in capital Tbilisi.

Georgia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs today confirmed two men, aged 20 and 16, had been detained for racial discrimination.

The two men were part of a group that called themselves ‘Bergman’ who verbally and physically assaulted two Nigerian citizens on September 19.

The incident happened on Rustaveli Ave in central Tbilisi. Shortly after the attack the offenders fled the scene.

A police report was made and officials launched an investigation to catch those responsible. The investigation led officers of the Old Tbilisi police division to two men – a 20-year-old only identified as Levan A and a 16-year-old named Irakli E.

Both offenders have pled guilty to the charges against them.

The investigation was carried out in accordance with Article 140, Part 3 of the Criminal Code of Georgia on the fact of racial discrimination committed by a group.
