Georgian wine is continuing to impress in all pockets of the world, with latest accolades coming from Japan.

The rich taste and aroma of Georgian wine has helped the product win a gold medal at one of Asia’s most prestigious wine competitions.

Georgia’s Badagoni wine was one of the winners of the 18th annual Japan Wine Challenge, held in Tokyo from August 28-30.

The Georgian wine making company Badagoni is famous for its Mukuzani-dry red wine made from grapes in Kakheti, Georgia’s famous wine-making region.

Georgian wines have their own stories to tell and it is our greatest ambition to be able to translate them into a language that will be comprehensible to the wine lovers around the world,” said a Badagoni company representative.

The Mukuzani wine type featured at the prestigious wine show. More than 1,400 different wines were entered in the challenge and later judged by a panel of about 30 leading wine professionals from Japan and the international market.

The wines originated from 28 countries including Georgia, Chile, France, Australia, Italy and Japan.

After judging, 13 wines received the coveted Trophy Award, while 63 other wines received gold medals – Georgia being one of these winners. An additional 254 wines received silver medals and 584 wine varieties took home bronze medals.

Special Trophy Awards were presented to Best Value Wine, Best Discovery Wine and Best Wine from organically grown grapes.

The Japan Wine Challenge website stated the aim of the competition was to raise awareness of a variety of international wines.

Our key focus continues to be the development of consumer-wine lover awareness and understanding of wines, resulting in an ongoing increase in sales of quality wines in this very demanding market.”

Organisers noted the wine competition not only supported and encouraged global marketing of wine but it also allowed wine professionals and all consumers to learn about and appreciate good wine.

The official awards ceremony will be held on January 29, 2016 in Japan.
