Today Georgia is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the signing of the Constitution of Georgia.
On this day in 1995 country officials signed the Constitution – the country’s basis of law. The occasion is being marked today with different activities that will conclude with a big celebration later this evening at the Presidential Palace.
The Constitution is the supreme law of Georgia and the country’s main document that outlines all laws.
Twenty years ago Georgia adopted the first Constitution, which established three branches of the Government: legislative, executive and judicial. Since then the Constitution has changed several times; the latest amendments were made on October 15, 2010.
About a thousand guests were invited by Georgia’s President Giorgi Margvelashvili to attend a special celebration party at the Presidential Palace this evening.
Members of Georgia’s Parliament, Government and court representatives, guests from constitutional institutions and non-governmental sectors, political parties, media and society figures will gather in Avlabari to celebrate Georgia’s Constitution Day.
Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili will also attend the celebration at the Presidential Palace.
Meanwhile Georgia’s Ministry of Justice exhibited the original Constitution documents adopted in 1995 and in 1924, which were kept at the National Archives of Georgia. The exhibition was held in recognition of the big celebration marking Georgia’s Constitution Day.
During the Soviet era Georgia signed five Constitutions (in 1921, 1922, 1927, 1937 and in 1978).
In 1993 Chairman of Georgia’s Parliament Eduard Shevardnadze initiated to adopt a completely new Constitution which later was created by 118 Georgian experts.
