The Government of Georgia is sharing details with its international partners of the country’s progress and ongoing efforts to assimilate with the European Union (EU) – something it is obligated to do under the Georgia-EU Association Agreement (AA).
Local and international officials gathered in Georgia’s capital Tbilisi last week for the annual Georgia-EU Subcommittee Meeting on Transport, Energy, Climate Action & Environment. The July 2-3 meeting focused on the Georgian Government's progress in adopting EU rules and standards.
Keeping the EU up-to-date about Georgia’s reforms and efforts to ensure local regulations met EU standards was necessary under the AA, said EU Delegation to Georgia.
At the meeting representatives of the Georgian Government and the EU Delegation to Georgia discussed the integration process of Georgia-EU energy markets. The EU Delegation to Georgia received updated information about the implementation of Georgia’s National Environment Action Plan and the sides also talked about aviation rules and standards that the EU was introducing to Georgia.
At the meeting the Georgian Government learned about latest EU developments and informed the EU envoys how to best support Georgia as it developed.
Georgia signed the AA with the EU on June 27, 2014. The AA aimed to deepen political and economic relations between the EU and Georgia and to gradually integrate the country in the EU's internal Market, the largest single market in the world.
Following the AA’s signing, it was revealed significant work needed to be done in Georgia on domestic reforms. In this area, the EU cooperated and assisted Georgia as it implemented all the regulations set by the EU, while on the other hand, Georgia was obliged to inform the EU about the progress made in Georgia as it worked to adopt EU regulations.
