Road restrictions have been put in place in north-eastern Georgia because of the area’s vulnerability to landslides.

Recent heavy rain caused the area in Dariali Gorge to become unstable, meaning there was now a potential for a landslide – so traffic has been restricted from travelling on the road. This piece of road is the main highway through the Caucasus that connects Georgia with Russia.

Specifically, a 134 kilometre section of the Mtskheta-Stefantsminda-Larsi will be restricted to all types of vehicles from 7pm this evening until 7am tomorrow morning, June 6.

Vehicle movement in the area will be coordinated by patrol police.

According to the National Environmental Agency, cars travelling on this road outside the restricted hours will be able to pass.

Meanwhile, last summer a strong landslide hit the area, killing at least five people and causing major damage to roads and local infrastructure.
