Special Mountain Battalion begins Afghan Mission

The Georgian military servicemen will fulfill their first mission at the Air Base in the Kandahar Province.

A unit of the Georgian Armed Forces has begun its involvement in the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) Mission.

The Special Mountain Battalion has already arrived in Afghanistan to complete their six-month duties.

The Georgian military servicemen will fulfill their first mission under the US contingent at the Air Base in the Kandahar Province.

The servicemen are set to undergo a final training exercise under the guidance of US and Georgian instructors.

Deployment of the Georgian contingent to the Kandahar Province is being carried out according to the preapproved schedule. Their redeployment to a new place was previously agreed with NATO and ISAF command.

Meanwhile, the Georgian soldiers underwent intensive pre-deployment preparation for the ISAF mission with a six-month stint at the Krtsanisi National Training Center.

The men also experienced a practice mission in the German city of Hohenfels.

The Georgian Battalion was said to have been well prepared and ready for the ISAF mission.
