Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili is calling the international community to react in a "calm but principled way” to Russia’s controversial action in Ukraine.
Speaking at a special press conference, the President stressed Georgia was "extremely concerned” by the situation in Crimea.
"Events in Ukraine not only threaten the regional stability but put the whole global order established after World War II in danger,” Margvelashvili stated.
The President noted this process was dangerous in two ways. Firstly it discredited the process of nuclear disbarment, as it happened in 1994 when Ukraine refused its nuclear arsenal and gained guarantees of its territorial integrity and sovereignty from Russian and the West.
The second danger was the precedent Russia created by its desire to have Crimea merge with its territory, and this created a problem to global security, Margvelashvili believed.
Summing up his statement, Margvelashvili said Georgia stood alongside civilized countries who considered that the problems between countries should be resolved by diplomatic actions rather than seizure of territory or by use of force involving military actions.
