Georgia’s national rugby team are one step closer to retaining the European Nations Cup and realizing their World Cup dreams.

The Lelos defeated Spain 24-17 in Madrid on Saturday in the penultimate round of the 2014 European Nations Cup league, which also served as a qualifier for the 2015 Rugby World Cup.

The team's victory against Russia in late February guaranteed Georgia a place in the prestigious international competition, set to be held in England, two rounds earlier than the Nations Cup final.

Despite yesterday's win over Spain, the Lelos could not score four tries, which left them without a bonus point. This allowed Romania to slip ahead of Georgia as the group’s leader.

The Romanian national team is scheduled to play Georgia on March 15 in Tbilisi in the final game of the European Nations Cup. The winner of the match will gain first place in their group and be inserted into Group C in the Rugby World Cup.

In this group, the team will compete against world number one New Zealand (the home country of the Georgian team’s coach), Argentina, Tonga, and the winner of the Africa Cup qualifier.
