The Government of Georgia has launched a project to significantly reduce the amount of damage caused by hail on the country’s agricultural industry.
The anti-hail project aimed to reduce the amount of damage caused by hail by 85 to 95 percent.
Yesterday, the Government’s Economic Council, led by Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili, announced a decision to allocate 20 million GEL to the project’s implementation.
The system will be introduced and implemented by Georgia’s scientific technical centre Delta, who suggested the program could decreasing the loss caused by hail by 85 to 95 percent.
Developing Georgia’s agricultural industry is one of the Government’s main priorities.
Officials believed, that given the large percentage of the rural population who were engaged in agriculture or had the potential to engage in agriculture, developing this sector in a positive direction could contribute to growing the economy and significantly raise the level of welfare of the population.
Meanwhile, the Government is continuing to stimulate the activities of land-poor farmers by supporting the implementation of an agricultural project, for the establishment of sustainable and developing farms
The 2014 Spring Project beneficiaries will be the farmers, who own, use or possess agricultural land greater than 1.25 hectares, and who use that land for annual or perennial crop cultivation.
The budget of the project was estimated to be around 90 million GEL ($52 million USD).
