The design of number plates of new vehicles registered in Georgia are set to undergo a major overhaul.

The Service Agency of the Ministry of Internal Affairs are planning to change the design and form of new Georgian plate numbers.

The change will come into effect from the beginning of Autumn this year and will see the number plates of new Georgian cars aligned with European standards.

Current owners of vehicles will not be obliged to change old number plates. These will be valid until 2030.

A presentation announcing the number plate changes was led by Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) today.

The new plate design will bear Georgian flag in the upper left corner, while the identification code of the country will be imprinted on the bottom right corner of the plate.

The structure and letter font will also be changed. Between two Latin letters places in right and left sides of the plate, three figures will be placed. In order to ensure authenticity of the plate number, a special hologram with an image of the national emblem will be inserted.

Plate numbers will also bear other signs in accordance with European standards to ensure the plates are not fraudulently used.

The price of the number plates will remain the same. Those who own personalized plates, for which a specific amount of cash was paid, will be offered to change their old plate numbers into the new format for free.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs Service Agency will announce an international tender on the purchase and production of the new number plates. The tender will be available to local and foreign companies.

Taking into consideration Georgian auto park, owners of vehicles imported from the United Stated and Japan will be able to receive square-shaped number plates.

Changes will also be implemented to vehicles with trailers.

Owing to the fact the number plates are running out, an additional number will be added to the new plates, and the new design will be further altered.
