The Government of Portugal has slated the new alliance between Russia and Georgia’s breakaway Abkhazia region and expressed its firm support to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia within its internationally recognised borders.

The de-facto president of breakaway Abkhazia Raul Khajimba and Russian President Vladimir Putin signed the controversial ‘Alliance and Strategic Partnership’ deal in Sochi November 24.

"Portugal one again confirms its firm support to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia within its internationally recognised borders.”

"The Government of Portugal believes the so-called treaty on ‘Alliance and Strategic Partnership’ signed between de-facto Abkhazia and Russia poses a threat to regional stability and security.”

"Therefore, we urge the Russian Federation to fulfill all of its obligations under the 2008 ceasefire agreement, to withdraw its forces to pre-conflict positions,” the statement said.
