A picture taken in Georgia’s high mountainous region has been selected as the ‘Photo of the Day’ by famous world culture magazine National Geographic.

The photo titled Blessed Beast showed a bull with candles on its horns being blessed at a tenth-century church near the town of Mestia, in the Svaneti region, before being sacrificed for a February feast dating from pre-Christian times.

The caption text to the picture read: "Traditions endure in the Svaneti region, high in Georgia’s Caucasus Mountains.”

The photo was taken by National Geographic Photographer Aaron Huey.

Earlier the magazine published an article describing the animal sacrifices, blood feuds, unique polyphonic music, astonishing ancient stone towers and ravishing views of wild nature, which visitors could explore in Svaneti.
