Georgian athlete wins silver at Youth Olympics

Georgia has gained its first medal at the Summer Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China.

Georgian Judoka Tamaz Kirakoshvili won a silver medal in the 81kg category of judo wrestling.

Kirakozashvili beat Israeli and Dutch opponents before being defeated by Russian Mikhail Igolnikov in the final.

Kirakozashvili was also the Georgian flag bearer at the second Summer Youth Olympic Games.

Two other Georgian sportsmen have ended their Olympic competition but did not gain a medal. 

Judoka Mariam Janashvili competed in the 52kg category reached the semi-final stage but was defeated by a Korean opponent in the semi-final.

Georgian fencer Nikoloz Shengelia lost to Russian Ivan Ilin in the quarter-final.

The Georgian Youth Olympic team consists of 12 aspiring athletes and before the competition ends, the team is expected to achieve more success.

The Olympic Games will finish on August 28.
