Georgian film wins top prize at Czech festival

Georgian director George Ovashvili was awarded the $25,000 Crystal Globe for best movie at the Czech film festival.

A Georgian man has won a top prize at the Karlovy Vary film festival in the Czech Republic.

George Ovashvili was awarded the $25,000 Crystal Globe for best movie at the Czech film festival.

His film Corn Island, is a psychological drama about an old man and his granddaughter who live on an island in a river separating Georgia from its breakaway region of Abkhazia.

The festival started on July 4, saw American actor Mel Gibson and US director William Friedkin receive Crystal Globes for their contribution to world cinematography.

Nearly 131,000 cinemagoers attended the festival.
