A Georgian environmental official has been selected to a high position at the United Nations Environmental Assembly (UNEA), currently being held in Kenya, Africa.
At the first session of the UNEA, Georgian Minister of Environment and Natural Resources Khatuna Gogoladze was selected as the Vice-President of the governing body of UNEA.
This was the first time a Georgian official had been selected to such a high-ranking position in the governing body of the United Nations (UN). Only ten representatives were selected as Bureau members from 193 UN countries. The Georgian Minister will represent Eastern Europe.
The first session of the UNEA closed yesterday. Within the frame of the session, the Georgian delegation participated in a number of bilateral and multilateral meetings.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and Prince of Monaco Albert II participated at the Assembly as special guests.
The General Assembly of UNEA represents an innovative platform for managing global environmental policy in legislative, financial and development spheres.
The event was attended by more than 1,200 representatives from 162 states, including 90 Ministers and members of Governments.
