This year, Tbilisi residents will be able to elect the Mayor of the capital city. For the first time, residents of the other 11 cities will also be able to vote for the Mayor of their choice.
According to changes in the local Self-Governance Bill, towns with a consistent population of more than 15,000 residents will be eligible to become a self-governing city. Voters living in these towns will be able to elect Mayors.
Georgian citizens of each region are also able to vote for the Government in 2014. In addition, the Bill has introduced a new structure at the regional level, called the Council of Union. This will be led by the Regional Governor.
Each Sakrebulo (district) can have anywhere from three to nine members in the Council depending on number of voters in the municipalities. But under the new amendments, the Council will be composed of the Mayor of the city, the Chairman, and Deputy Chairman of each Sakrebulo.
According to political science experts, the elections of 2014 will be a political arena for every political party to demonstrate their power and influence.
