President of the United States Barack Obama is congratulating the people of Georgia on the anniversary of Georgia's independence.
On May 26 in 1918, Georgia declared its independence and separated from Russia. The day is a major public holiday and is observed on May 26 each year.
In a letter, US Secretary of State John Kerry said on behalf of President Obama, the US and Georgia had built a "deep and vibrant partnership based on a shared commitment to democratic values”.
"We commend Georgia on its progress towards Euro-Atlantic integration. In the face of challenging developments in the region, the United States will continue to support the development of Georgia’s democracy and uphold its commitment to Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders," read the letter.
President Obama believed the two countries shared a strong bond in terms of a security partnership.
"We honour the commitment of your troops who serve in Afghanistan and in other missions that build a more peaceful and prosperous world," said the letter.
The message ended noting President Obama looked forward to strengthening the US-Georgia partnership in the years to come.
