Georgian Flag bearer for Winter Olympics named

Georgian figure skater Elene Gedevanishvili will carry the countrys flag at the opening ceremony of the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics.

"I am honored to be chosen as a flag bearer, the Olympian said.

"There is no doubt I will accept this offer. Besides holding the flag, it is also very important to represent my country well.

The former Olympian competed at the 2006 and 2010 Winter Olympic Games.

Gedevanishvili, Georgias leading figure skater, is a two-time (2012, 2010) European bronze medalist. By winning the medal in 2010, Gedevanishvili became the first skater from Georgia to gain a medal at the International Skating Union Championships.

Currently, Gedevanishvili is in Budapest where she is expected to compete at the European Skating Championship tonight.

At this stage the Georgian national team for the 2014 Sochi Olympics will consist of four people; Gedevanishvili and three skiers, however one more skier may be added to the team.

The Georgians will arrive in Sochi on February 6, a day before the 2014 Winter Olympics will start.
