Ex-Chief Deputy Prosecutor David Chkhatarashvili who was arrested yesterday has been sentenced to imprisonment.
The decision was made at todays court session. The court was appealed with trial detentions of Chkhatarashvili by prosecution. The defense, however, requested Chkhatarashvili to be sentenced with a preventive measure in the form of collateral or not to be sentenced by any kind of restraining order sentence.
The former Chief Prosecutor Murtaz Zodelava also attended the process. Chkatarashvili was previously a deputy for the former Chief Prosecutor. Zodelava did not comment on the judges decision but said that he does not know if legal proceedings are going to start against him.
By decision of the Judge Zviad Esebua, the preliminary hearing will be held on January 27.Ex-Chief Deputy Prosecutor of the former Chief Prosecutor Murtaz Zodelava, David Chkhatarashvili is accused of abusing his power, organization of degrading and inhuman treatment, falsification of evidence in grave or especially grave criminal case, and organization of organized crime provocation.
According to the investigation, during September of 2012, Davit Chkatarashvili and the former Minister of Justice Zurab Adeishvili abused several prisoners in Gldani Prison #8 and recorded the torturing. Zurab Adeishvili is currently wanted by an Interpol Red Circular. During that time, Chkatarashvili and the other high officials knew that the former superintendent of the Gldani Prison, Vladimer Bedukadze had dispersed a lot of torture footage to several journalists. Chkatarashvilis purpose was to spread false information that the investigative structures had revealed the inmate torturing in prison, before the opposition TV channels, Maestro and TV9 broadcast the video footage that Vladimer Bedukadze sent them. Bedukadze was in Brussels at that moment.
